What are retainers?
The fact is that teeth can move, which is what makes teeth straightening possible, can lead to relapse later down the line. Like anything worth keeping, you have to maintain your teeth alignment, which is where retainers come in. In order to prevent your teeth from moving, retainers must be worn after your treatment has finished. Generally, there are two types:
Removable retainers – these are aligners and are removable. They are clear and made of plastic. You will be required to wear them at night to minimize relapse. Your retainer it can be soaked in a solution such as Retainerbrite, following manufacturers’ instructions, to disinfect it and prevent build-up.
Fixed retainers – fixed retainers are bonded to minimise relapse. They are stainless steel wires cemented to the inside of your front teeth and they stay on permanently. They cannot be seen as they sit behind your teeth. It is very important to clean them thoroughly to avoid decay.
